Dr. Yune Tran, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Education and Human Services, recently published Handbook of Research on Equity in Computer Science in P-16 Education. Published by IGI Global, it is a comprehensive reference book that highlights relevant issues, perspectives, and challenges in P-16 environments that relate to the inequities that students face in accessing programs related to computer science (CS) and computational thinking (CT) and examines methods for challenging these inequities in hopes of allowing all students equal opportunities for learning these skills. The 16 chapters cover a range of research topics that include but not limited to gender and racial imbalances in the CS field, the population of growing CS teachers who are predominantly white and male, professional development programs, teacher preparation for CS and CT, mentorship in the field, English learners’ access to CS/CT, and computing education.

One area of Dr. Yune’s research and work is related to equity and access. This work stemmed from past experiences working with elementary schools and the state to leverage opportunities, identify and adopt K-12 CS standards, and provide high-quality curricula in CS and CT for K-12 students.
