Counseling Department Chair Dr. Dana Levitt and PhD student Christina Kadelski presented “The Pandemic Push: Ethical Telehealth Delivery” at the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.

Distance counseling has been in existence and grew exponentially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although there is a voluntary credential for counselors providing distance counseling, the profession does not have widespread regulation of online counseling practices. Many counselors quickly shifted to this modality in 2020 with little professional guidance on ethical practice. Assuming that burgeoning counselors are entering the profession with the expectation for some telehealth counseling, counselor educators and supervisors must prepare them to do so ethically.

In their session, they shared the results of a descriptive study of counselors’ adherence to the ethical practice of telehealth counseling and discussed training, supervision, and practice recommendations based on the study results.
