Dr. Stephanie Silvera, Professor in the Public Health Department, commented on guidelines for reopening salons that closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. She noted, “How can we do so in the safest way possible? Unfortunately, this is not one of the safer activities. It really is up on the higher risk category. The big challenge of any salon is that it’s close contact over an extended period of time. It’s impossible to spatially distance. You can’t be six feet away from someone and cut their hair.”

Unfortunately, it is quite difficult to successfully meet all the guidelines. “You only need one person to come in and potentially be asymptomatic to spread the disease,” Dr. Silvera says.
