On April 28, 2016 public health students enrolled in HLTH-433 ‘Population Approaches to Diet & Activity’ led by Professor Melanie Shefchik participated in a field trip to City Green, an urban farm located in Clifton. City Green, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to facilitating the establishment of urban farms and gardens in NJ communities to create increased access to healthy, local food while cultivating education in food systems, nutrition and the environment. Students received a tour of the 5-acre farm while learning about the numerous community programs City Green implements to achieve its mission. These include educational workshops on gardening and farming, distribution of mini-grants for the establishment of community gardens, and mobile farmer’s markets throughout Clifton, Paterson, and Passaic. After the tour, students then volunteered on the farm by harvesting spinach, weeding, planting sunflowers and feeding the goats! It was a great opportunity to see and experience public health nutrition efforts in action!
