Student Productions

Students perform in, direct, design, build, mangage and run shows in three production programs:

Theatre and Dance Series

Theatre and Dance Series produces an annual season of plays and dance performances which showcase the work of theatre, musical theatre and dance majors. For additional information, including events calendars and media links, go to:

Theatre in the Raw

Theatre-in-the-Raw is an experimental venue which explores the “process” through which theatre is created. The program is part of the Department’s initiative to create a performance culture at Montclair State which embraces multiple modes of creativity. Students write original work, explore innovative performance techniques and experiment with new dramatic material. The possibilities for theatrical expression are almost limitless. Theatre-in-the-Raw performances are free and open to the public.

Montclair State Theatre-On-The-Move!

The Department of Theatre and Dance is going places! We’re "on the move" by taking our student touring company to schools throughout New Jersey to perform plays that explore contemporary topics and social issues. For more information, go to Montclair State Theatre on the Move!

Professional Productions

The College of the Arts sponsors a number of professional productions including the popular Peak Performances series managed by the Office of Arts & Cultural Programming, as well as the Theatre and Dance Department’s "New Works Initiative," which accepts applications from artists seeking support to produce new and experimental works.  Both programs provide performance opportunities for our students.

New Works Initiative (NWI)

New Works Initiative is a project dedicated to developing and producing original new works in theatre and dance. Modeled after the Sundance Lab in Utah and the O’Neill Theater Center in Connecticut, NWI provides a home where the American professional performance community can develop and produce exciting new works that draw on the talents and skills of Montclair’s theaters and dance students.

Each year, one NWI project is selected through adjudication of national submissions of work intended to be developed on the Montclair State campus.  NWI will support a creative team of one to four artists including artist fees, travel and accommodations (if necessary), dedicated rehearsal space(s), stage management and an auditioned student cast.

NWI is sponsored by Robert S. and Holly J. Gregory.  For more information, go to New Works Initiative.
