As part of a multi-semester initiative, the musical “The Reawakening of the Gods” continues to be the core and engine of an international collaboration between Montclair State University (Inserra Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies, Musical Theatre Program, the Cali School of Music) and Savatteri Produzioni, a musical theater company based in Italy.
The next phase for Spring 2026 includes the audition and rehearsals for the March 27 Public Reading of the musical to be presented in English translation for the first time.
The call for the Summer 2026 internship in Sicily is also open. CLICK HERE for more info.
The musical “The Reawakening of the Gods,” written and directed by Maestro Marco Savatteri, is a unique show that celebrates the timelessness of Greek mythology and its tensions (peace/war, love/hatred, generosity/selfishness, tragedy/comedy, gravitas/lightness). Through a lyrical and incisive script that combines acting and singing with refinement, and through magical make up, costumes and head pieces, this musical is at once a pleasantly accessible introduction to Greek gods and goddesses and a reflection on their powerful topicality in our world. Designed to be presented with an immersive format (ancient theaters, archeological sites, etc.), “The Reawakening” has proven to be incredibly adaptable thanks to Savatteri’s creativity: its tapestry of seamlessly woven vignettes has convincingly morphed into a stunningly beautiful tableau vivant on a small stage in NYC in 2024. It now comes to Montclair State as a Reading, which will be based on an ABRIDGED VERSION of the script, accompanied by a small musical ensemble of MSU students and faculty, and for the first time presented in English as part of an effective interdisciplinary collaboration on our campus.
To participate in the Reading, students should plan on:
- Applying through this GOOGLE FORM by Sun. Feb. 15 to share personal information, a max 2-page resumé, and a video. The video is expected to be of good audiovisual quality, max 5 minutes long, and to contain the performance of a song that according to the student reflects his/her vocal skills, whether from the opera or musical repertoire s/he is familiar with.
- If selected, submitting a spoken and/or sung video in English from “The Reawakening” script based on one of the roles described in the list Marco Savatteri will send with related recordings by Sat. Feb. 28. This video is expected to show both voice and acting skills, and can be uploaded on the same GOOGLE FORM.
- Further studying the relevant sections of the script in March to be ready for preliminary rehearsals between March 17-21 with Ryan Kasprzak (Chair of the Musical Theater Program) (place and times TBA)
- Attending the rehearsals with Marco Savatteri March 23-25, every day from 6 to 10pm (place TBA)
- Performing in the Reading on Fri. March 27 at PM in Leshowitz Recital Hall, John J. Cali School of Music.
This Reading is the current culmination of a multi-part project which started with Marco Savatteri’s on-campus visit in March 2025: a workshop and auditions held back then resulted in the selection of three MSU students as part of a paid internship entailing the performance in the musical in Sicily (Valley of the Temples of Agrigento) for the Summer 2025 season. In October 2025, Savatteri visited Montclair State again to illustrate the Summer 2025 experience and plan the next phase of Spring 2026 leading up to the Reading in English, thanks to the translation of 2025 intern Brianna Coppolino with the supervision of Prof. Marisa Trubiano, as part of an Italian Translation class.
And the project is already advancing towards the next phase: the Summer 2026 paid internship. For information about the requirements and auditions, click here.
