The New York Philharmonic Principal Brass Quintet, comprising the principal brass players of the Orchestra, enjoys worldwide exposure and an international reputation. The group made its debut in 1983 when they joined with The Canadian Brass for a concert in Ottawa, Canada. This was the beginning of a regular musical collaboration between these two brass quintets, with subsequent joint performances at the summer festivals of Tanglewood, Wolf Trap, Great Woods, and Mostly Mozart; concerts in cities throughout Canada and the United States; and on four recordings. The members of the ensemble have also joined their brass colleagues from the Boston Symphony Orchestra and The Philadelphia Orchestra. The Principal Brass Quintet has hosted an annual Holiday Concert at Avery Fisher Hall since 1995. Joining as guests on this extravaganza have been the Lee Musiker Trio; the Canadian Brass; the German Brass; the West Point Brass, Percussion, and Vocalists; Sesame Street’s Bob McGrath; and the Salvation Army’s New York Staff Band.

ORCHESTRA OPEN HOUSE

High School String Students are invited to join the Montclair State Orchestra and Faculty in an open rehearsal on November 16th from 5-7PM.  The first hour is dedicated to reviewing the parts in a sectional meeting with Cali string faculty, and the second hour is an immersive side by side reading and rehearsal with current Cali School students and conductor Kyle Ritenauer.  Dive into the gorgeous slow movement of Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 and take a glimpse into life at Montclair State.

Student Testimonials:

“The highlight of my time here at Montclair State was when I had the opportunity to perform with the Kronos String Quartet through the amazing Immersive Residency Program.  It was a dream come true for me.  I come from rock n’roll and started with the guitar.  When I first heard Kronos play Purple Haze, it blew my mind.  To be able to play with Kronos on stage at Merkin Hall was something out of a story book. ”
—Randy León, MM. Cello Performance 2023

“The John J Cali School of music has been a place where I’ve been able to blossom as a musician through the various opportunities that have been made accessible to me. Whether it’s masterclasses, residencies, or even my private lessons, the Cali school has given me the tools and experiences to excel beyond my expectations. ”
