This summer marks the launch of the ENERGY STAR® Higher Education Benchmarking Initiative (HEBI). HEBI is seeking institutions  to submit campus-wide energy & water usage data through the Energy Star Portfolio Manager. Their analysis will examine data from 2019, taking into consideration an institution’s enrollment, Carnegie ranking, and other factors so it can group like institutions for comparison. In return for participation, each institution will be provided with an energy scorecard.

HEBI recognizes the unique challenges that energy managers face in trying to benchmark energy usage against other institutions.

Energy data collection is notoriously difficult on college campuses. Buildings aren’t simply classrooms or gymnasiums or restaurants or office spaces. They can have all these things, with each building use type consuming very different levels of energy. — GreenerU

The Office of Energy Management already monitors our energy & water usage on campus and we are excited to participate in this new initiative!

Stay tuned to see our scorecard later this year.
