Please note, mail.montclair.edu accounts will serve as the primary point of contact for correspondence with the University. Because of this, students are strongly encouraged to check this e-mail system often for notices from the University that may affect them.

All current MSU students are eligible for e-mail access. Creating an MSU NetID account will provide access to e-mail.
E-mail can be accessed through a web browser from any computer with an Internet connection at http://webmail.montclair.edu. WebMail provides students with all typical e-mail services including sending and receiving mail, exchanging attachments, organizing mail and even managing a mailbox. For students without e-mail access, setting up a NetID account using the online NetID Account Form at http://netid.montclair.edu will automatically provide access to both


How do I create an e-mail account?

1. Using a web browser, go to https://netid.montclair.edu to create your NetID account .
2. Under the student category, enter your CWID number then the PIN# (if you do not know your PIN#, please see the FAQ at the bottom of this page)
3. Click Login.
4. Read the MSU Guidelines for Responsible Computing [http:/ / oit.montclair.edu/ tsc/ helpdesk/ aboutoit/ guidelines.html].
5. Type "Yes" if you agree with the guidelines and click Continue.
6. Verify that your first and last names are correct. If so, click the button to continue.
7. Enter the password that you'd like to use for your NetID account and click the button to create your account.
8. After a few seconds (while your application is processed), your NetID will appear (the typical syntax for a student NetID is lastname + firstinitial + a number).
9. Your NetID and password will be active to use your MSU Email account


How do I access e-mail?

E-mail can be accessed through http://webmail.montclair.edu in any web browser with Internet access. When the site appears, a prompt will ask for a username and password. Enter your NetID and password and the mail interface will open.

What web-browsers are compatible with Webmail?

Our WebMail interface has problems loading in the latest version of Internet Explorer 9. Therefore, we suggest you access WebMail in one of the following ways:
1. Mozilla FireFox Version 3 and 4
2. Safari
3. Google Chrome
4. Outside Mail Clients such as Mozilla Thunderbird


How do I forward my email to my g-mail, yahoo, hotmail accounts ECT...?

 Go to Http://Netid.montclair.edu and log in to the netid account form to change your forwarding options. Type in your Campus Wide Identifier (CWID)
Type in your 6-digit PIN #
Click Login
Scroll to the bottom and type Yes to agree
Click on Continue
Select Change my E-mail forwarding options
Click Continue


 How do I create my Montclair State University E-Mail Account if I am a Transfer or Graduate Student?

In order to create your NetID, you will need to register for classes first using your CWID and PIN. It will take 24 hours (1 business day) after you register to be able to create your NetID

After I graduate how long can I keep my Montclair State University E-Mail Account?

Students can keep their e-mail address up to TWO (2) semesters after they have graduated. After those three semesters, your NetID account will be closed. Three months after the account has been closed, all e-mails are purged (deleted) from the system. Therefore, if you graduate in May 2012 your Montclair State University e-mail address will be de-activated as of May 2013.

Once you've created your NetID account, you can return to the NetID Account Form at any time to change your password at http://netid.montclair.edu

What is IMAP and what is POP (POP3)?
top

Montclair State University E-mail is an IMAP account and should be set-up accordingly on mail clients and smartphones. IMAP is a type of mail server which is designed to retain messages and user preferences on the server itself as opposed to an individual computer. Mail.Montclair is an IMAP server. POP is a type of mail server which is designed to have e-mail downloaded periodically to a local computer for storage. Although POP servers can store messages on the server, they are not designed to retain an entire mailbox of messages and user preferences. POP servers usually have a smaller storage area than IMAP servers.
