Canvas Releases New Rich Content Editor (RCE)

Posted in: News

Instructure Canvas has released a New Rich Content Editor (RCE, aka, Text Editor). The current Classic Rich Content Editor will be discontinued and the New Rich Content Editor will be enabled for all Canvas institutions on January 16, 2021.

The New RCE provides a more intuitive toolbar that groups common icons and interactions. It impacts all Canvas features which use text editing: Syllabus, Announcements, Assignments, Discussions, Pages and Quizzes. To learn more details about the New RCE, please check out the ITDS Faculty Canvas Orientation Course on the New RCE.

To explore the new feature early, faculty can turn it on anytime in any Canvas course via Settings > Feature Options > RCE Enhancements. On December 7th, 2020, the New Rich Content Editor will be enabled for all Spring 2021 courses. Please note, while you can enable and disable the new feature during this early period, the New RCE will replace the current version starting January 16, 2021.
