NJ Primary Election Update

Important Information about the July 7 Primary Election, Voting by Mail and more!

Posted in: Announcements, Featured News

As we learned in early April, the NJ Primary Election, originally scheduled for Tuesday, June 2, 2020 has been moved to Tuesday, July 7, 2020. We have been closely monitoring any changes in the election process and want to keep you up to date so you are ready to vote on July 7.

NJ Election Updates

  • The NJ Primary elections scheduled for Tuesday, July 7, 2020 will now be conducted mainly by vote-by-mail. This change comes as a result of Executive Order No. 144 signed by Governor Phil Murphy on Friday, May 15, 2020.
  • Ballots will be sent via mail to every voter who is a registered Democrat or Republican and vote-by-mail applications will be sent to all unaffiliated or inactive voters.

What Is the NJ Primary Election?

Primary elections are elections held prior to Election Day in November for voters to decide upon their party’s (in New Jersey’s case the Democratic and Republican parties) preferred candidate. The winner of the Primary Elections will be awarded delegates and then officially become the party’s nominee at the conventions held by both parties later in the summer.

Action Steps:

  • If you lived on campus during the academic year 2019-2020 make sure to update your mailing address so that your vote-by-mail ballot is sent to your current address
  • If you still live on campus and have moved from any main campus residence hall (Bohn, Blanton, Stone, Machuga, Dinallo, Freeman, or Russ) you still need to update your voter registration since the Village Apartments are located in a different town than main campus residence halls
  • If you are a commuter student make sure your current registered mailing address is still where you currently receive mail.
  • If you are not affiliated with a party but would like to be you need to update your voter registration to reflect this change.
  • If you are not registered to vote you will be receiving a vote-by-mail application to your current mailing address that the state has on file for you. You can fill this application out or you can register to vote online.
