2016 Summer Internship in Florence, Italy

Surtitling for Performing Arts Festivals

Internship at Florence

The Inserra Chair and the Italian Program at Montclair State University are pleased to offer a five-week summer internship in Florence (early June-July 2016).

This project is part of a broader initiative, started in summer 2015, which has provided Italian minors and majors with the opportunity of surtitling a number of plays presented at the Piccolo Teatro of Milan on the occasion of Expo 2015 (see VIDEO). The initiative is continuing this semester with the equally prestigious Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Opera di Roma, the Terme di Caracalla (Rome) and the Arena di Verona.

The intern will work hands-on with experts from Prescott Studio on audiovisual translation projects for prestigious festivals in Italy this summer such as the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma’s contemporary musical theater festival. The intern will be expected to work as part of the Prescott team and be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing at the advanced level in Italian while working on-site. Responsibilities will include: collaboration on the translation of texts, timing, editing and deployment during live performances of surtitles, involvement in organizational aspects of the productions and input on the promotion of the Company. This is a paid internship. Lodging in Florence will be covered for the whole stay, as well as transportation and lodging related to the off-site festivals. The intern will be expected to work 40 hours/week for 5 weeks.

Support for this internship is provided by the Inserra Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies and Prescott Studio, Florence, Italy.

Eligibility: Advanced students enrolled in the Italian program. Preference will be given to a current major in Italian or a major who graduated in 2015-16.

Requirements:

  1. Completion of at least one translation course in Italian
  2. Prior experience with the completion of at least one surtitling project (preference will be given to Prescott-related projects)

The internship position for 2016 has been assigned.
