Earlier in the semester, students from The Montclarion were given the unique opportunity to attend the National College Media Convention in Washington D.C. Along with Faculty Advisor Tara George, the students spent four days at the convention, where they attended sessions designed specifically for campus news organizations. Over 275 different learning sessions were offered in subjects ranging from photojournalism to career preparation.

“As someone who hopes to work in the documentary film industry, I found it valuable to attend freelancing workshops and receive freelancing advice from a documentary filmmaker,” said Managing Editor Mackenzie Robertson. “This was my first time attending the event and I met some incredible people and connected with college journalists from all over the country.”

Those at the conference were treated to keynote speeches by prominent journalists such as The Washington Post’s Executive Editor Marty Baron, National Public Radio Legal-Affairs Correspondent Nina Totenberg, and CNN White House Correspondent Abby Phillip.

In addition to meeting journalists from around the country, the conference also served as a bonding experience for The Montclarion’s staff. “We learned a lot about different approaches to journalism and how to be better representatives of the industry,” said Editor-in-Chief Heather Berzak. “But we also learned a lot about each other. So, everyone came out of it with more insight and knowledge than before, in all aspects of life.”
