Applying to a Communication Program
The guidelines and application link below apply only to the following programs in the School of Communication & Media:
- Communication and Media Arts (BA)
- Communication Studies (BA)
- Communication Studies Minor
- Public Relations (BA)
Applications to these programs are reviewed on a rolling basis.
Applying for admission to the School of Communication and Media is a two-step process:
Step 1. Submit an application to Montclair State University.
To apply as a new freshman or transfer student, you must first apply to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
Following submission of the University application, applicants who qualify will receive a formal invitation, sent by email, to submit a separate Application to the School of Communication and Media.
Step 2. Submit an Application to the School of Communication and Media (Minimum admission requirement is an overall GPA of 3.0 for all programs)
All applicants for the programs identified above (majors and minor) must submit a separate application to the School of Communication and Media, in addition to the University application. Applications to these specific programs are reviewed on a rolling basis. Freshman applicants should try to apply no later than March (note: in order to be considered for on-campus housing and Financial Aid).
Once you submit your application, it will be immediately forwarded to a Communication area faculty member for review. The School of Communication and Media will notify you of the admissions decision within two weeks. The status of your overall admission to Montclair State University will subsequently be communicated by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
The application includes questions regarding your interests in communication, related experiences to your intended major, and your familiarity with your intended program and its courses. You may also submit a resume or list of experiences with your application (optional).
Students accepted to a program based on review of the School application will be invited and strongly encouraged to attend one of the monthly information sessions (see schedule in section below). During the sessions you will meet other students in your cohort, student ambassadors, and faculty (particularly your academic advisor). Please make sure to indicate in your application which information session you wish to attend if accepted into your program of interest.
