Non-Degree Status Policies

• Admission to non-degree status does not guarantee acceptance into a Montclair undergraduate degree program. A maximum of 12 credits may be applied toward a degree if you later choose to matriculate, and 12 is also the total number of credits a non-degree student may earn. 
• As a non-degree student, you are not eligible for credit evaluations or academic advising. 
• A non-degree application is valid for one semester only; if you wish to remain a non-degree student for another semester, you must submit a new Non-Degree Application

How to qualify as a non-degree student

To qualify, you must have earned a high school diploma or equivalency before submitting your application and provide documentation showing proof of successful completion of your secondary education (a copy of your high school or equivalency diploma).

Advising and Support

As a non-degree student, you are not eligible for credit evaluations or academic advising, and your non-degree application is valid for one semester only. To continue beyond one term, you must resubmit the Non-Degree Application.

Important Information for Visiting Students

Time limits and eligibility

• Visiting student status is limited to a maximum of two semesters, excluding summer and winter sessions.
• After two semesters as a visiting student, you must apply to and be accepted into a degree program to continue enrolling.
• If you have been denied regular admission to Montclair State University, you are not eligible to be a visiting student for the semester in which you were denied.
• The Visiting Student Application is valid for one semester only; a new form must be submitted each semester.​

Fees and registering for classes

As a visiting student, you will be charged a one-time, nonrefundable $25 processing fee for the entire summer or winter session upon your initial registration for one or more courses. 

Registration may be completed up to and including the first meeting of the course as long as the course is open. Register early to decrease the possibility of being closed out of classes; the University cannot guarantee that your preferred schedule will be available.
