What a Bright Time, It’s The Right Time … To Begin Your Job Search!

Use winter break to your advantage by dedicating some of your free time to career preparation. It’s the perfect time to begin working on your resume, cover letter, practicing interview techniques and applying for jobs and internships! Additionally, several on-campus employers open spring applications for on-campus jobs and internships and off-campus employers hire for seasonal, part-time and internship positions.

Shine Bright Like a S.T.A.R.

The STAR method is an interview technique that allows you to tell a complete, linear story about your experience. It consists of Situation, Task, Action and Result.

  • Situation: Paint an accurate picture and set the scene.
  • Task: What was your role/responsibility in this situation?
  • Action: Tell the employer the steps you took to tackle this and complete the task.
  • Result: What were the outcomes and your achievements?

Check out the Indeed article “How to Use the STAR Interview Response Technique” article for an in-depth breakdown!

Don’t Forget the Hidden Market

The holidays are often a time to reconnect with friends and family and reflect on the year, which is a great opportunity for you to discuss your career goals and expand your network.

Understanding the hidden market can open up new opportunities, like open positions that have yet to be posted. Networking is an important tool for uncovering “hidden” jobs and internships. Some additional tips are:

  • Expand your social network by utilizing professional sites, such as LinkedIn.
  • Search for in-house job boards.
  • Discuss job postings organizations where your friends or acquaintances are currently employed.
