In spring 2002, 1,704 students began the admissions
process by sending an application to Montclair State University’s various
graduate degree, certification, certificate and non-degree programs. These students were not necessarily first
time to MSU, but they were first time to these programs. This number reflects
complete and incomplete applications. A
somewhat smaller number, 1,291, completed the application process. The number of completes applications is up
from last spring’s number of 1,141.
Those with completed applications make up the applicant base from which
the numbers and percents in the accompanying tables were drawn.
The number of completed applications for
degree-seeking students was 36.2 percent (down fro last year’s 43.8 percent);
52.0 percent applied as non-degree students; 11.0 percent applied for
certification programs; and another 0.9 percent applied to one of the
certificate programs.
This spring the University accepted 85 percent of
all applicants, up from last year’s 73 percent. Of those accepted, 73.1 percent, or 800 students, enrolled in
classes this spring.
The Average verbal and math Graduate Record Exam
(GRE) test scores for enrolled degree-seeking graduate students were 436 and
503, respectively. The average score
for the Miller Analogies Test was 44 and for the GMAT it was 510.
The average undergraduate GPA for enrolled
degree-seeking graduate students was 3.15.
Seventy-five percent of first-time enrolled graduate
students were female. This spring, 9.5 percent did not supply any information
for their race/ethnicity. But for those
supplying this information, 63.9 percent were white; 12.4 percent were African
American; 6.9 percent were Latino/American; 4.3 percent were Asian; and 3.0
percent were non-resident aliens.
Seventy-four percent of the first-time enrolled graduate students came from four counties: Bergen, 23.1 percent; Essex, 22.9 percent; Passaic, 16.3 percent and Morris, 11.8 percent. Slightly over 4.6 percent of the first-time students come from outside NJ (other states).
