The mission of the Center for Academic Development and Assessment is twofold: 1) to provide learning support programs that encourage academic success for Montclair State University students with the ultimate goal of helping them become independent lifelong learners, 2) to provide testing for placement in English writing, reading and mathematics courses.
1. CADA is certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) that provides tutoring, supplemental instruction and academic development services to Montclair State University students. The individual and group tutorial sessions are offered in most academic areas by the master and peer tutors who have excelled in their particular subject areas and have been recommended by the faculty. All tutors receive training on study skills and tutoring techniques to best assist students.
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is offered by CADA as a learning support program designed to help students master the difficult course content through the development and/or implementation of learning strategies. CADA organizes scheduled out of classroom weekly SI sessions with trained SI leaders to work with the students from the selected courses. The SI sessions are open to any student in the course.
Additionally, the Center offers a variety of workshops on effective study strategies and learning techniques. Students are encouraged to stop by and learn how CADA can assist them in enhancing their academic performance through the application of effective note taking and listening skills, memory and test taking strategies, writing, and stress management skills.
2. The Center also coordinates and administers the Montclair State University Placement Test (MSUT) to all entering freshman, readmitted and transferred students with fewer than 26 transferable credit hours. Test proctoring services for non-Montclair students and other standardized tests for external agencies are also provided by the Center for Academic Development and Assessment.
