International Student Admission Requirements
ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENT
International students who earned undergraduate (or graduate) degrees in a country where English is not the official language are required to take the MSU ESL placement test and score at a level of IV or higher. Students who do not place at this level will be required to take ESL courses. Students will be issued an ESL checklist that specifies courses to be followed; GPC will include this information in the student's program of study. All ESL courses should be completed as quickly as possible, and no later than the beginning of the third semester of graduate study.
TOEFL AND Test OF English AT MSU
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is required of all students whose native language is not English and whose degree was obtained in a country where English is not the official language (regardless of how long student has been in U.S.). In addition, there is an English language proficiency test, administered at Montclair State University, required once the student arrives in the United States. Upon review of the English language proficiency test score, students may be required to enroll in English as a Second Language (ESL) courses at Montclair State University.
NACES (National Association of Credential Evaluation Services)
Applicants who received their degrees outside of the United States and have foreign transcripts must receive a COURSE-BY-COURSE transcript evaluation from a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). NACES is an association of private foreign educational credential evaluation services committed to formulating and maintaining ethical standards in the field of foreign educational evaluation. Within the United States, no government agency monitors the establishment of foreign credential evaluation services. NACES was founded in 1987 by credential evaluation services dedicated to promoting excellence and committed to setting the standards for the profession.
Please contact a NACES member to receive an "Application for Evaluation of Foreign Credentials". Requests for evaluation are usually honored within twenty working days of receipt of all required materials and fees. You must include instructions on the application to send a copy of the evaluation to The Graduate Admissions and Support Services at Montclair State University. You must provide the NACES member you selected with copies of transcripts from all previous educational institutions and certified English translations. Students do not need to submit official transcripts to the Graduate School. An official evaluation sent to Montclair State University from the NACES member you selected is the only requirement.
