Personal Leave

A leave of absence without pay for personal reasons. Staff may request for a leave of absence without salary to be considered by the University for non medical purposes.

Eligibility:

  • Must be a full or part-time employee at the University
  • Does not include temporary employees and Faculty

Always refer to the appropriate collective negotiations agreements for any variations or additional details in the above policy.

Requesting a Leave of Absence

Notification

  • Give at least 30 days’ notice, if you know in advance of your need for a leave of absence.
  • If you learn of your need for time off or a leave of absence less than 30 days ahead of time, request it as soon as you are able.

Submitting Your Leave Request

Paid Time off During Leave

Employees that are approved for a personal leave of absence are not permitted to charge any accrued paid time off (including sick, vacation, personal, administrative and/or compensatory) during their absence. 

An employee on leave without salary for one calendar month or longer does not accrue vacation or sick leave benefits.

Note: 

Faculty members who will be without pay from Montclair State University will also need to complete and submit a request for a Faculty Leave of Absence without pay for the Board of Trustees (BOT) approval. You will need to supply the necessary administrative forms. 

Benefits During Leave

While on an unpaid leave of absence from Montclair State University

  • During a personal leave, the employee is responsible for full premium of health benefits while on leave without pay through COBRA. Employees will receive a notice about continuation of coverage under COBRA at the time coverage ends. Health coverage must be reinstated upon return to work via Benefitsolver. Continuation of coverage is offered under COBRA for up to 18 months..
  • Employees will not earn pension service credit, will not receive or make pension contributions, and will not earn vacation or sick accruals.
Returning to Work
  •  Employees must give at least two (2) weeks notice of their intention to return to work.
  • If an employee fails to return to work or notify the supervisor in writing of his/her intentions at the end of approved leave, he/she will be considered absent without official leave and subject to termination.
